NEW! Art Doll Adventures by Lisa Li Hertzi

Doll-making inspired by cultural icons - Exploring Projects and Processes through Cultural Traditions Finding meaning in your art is one thing; doing it for the fun of the creation is another. How do they go together? Making dolls inspired by cultural icons brings new meaning to your work and helps you connect with larger universal truths. Doll makers are very conscious of and interested in the history of the human/female figure and cultural icons, and often use them as starting points for their designs. Spirit dolls, African icons, goddess figures, and Hopi katichinas are all popular forms. Using history as a starting point, Lisa-Li Hertzi has created five exciting doll projects, inspired by five very different cultural and historical icons/figures. Through the projects, she explores the creative process, the meaning and significance of each figure, and teaches techniques that doll makers are currently experimenting with: journaling, collage, mixed media, and found objects. Each doll is presented as a step-by-step project with complete instructions, and is followed by a gallery featuring interpretations by leading doll artists of the same cultural figure. Fantastic full color illustrations and patterns by the author are included.

Creative Cloth Doll Making by Patti Medaris Culea

Exciting new book on cloth doll making. Patti has created three new patterns for this book. All of them the same size so that you can mix and match body parts if you'd like. The book focuses on all kinds of surface embellishment. Dyeing, painting and stamping are in one chapter. Creating new fabrics using free motion machine lace, melting tyvek and diaper liners, burning silk with a heat gun, etc are in another chapter. Two other chapters go into beading techniques and fabric collage.
This unique 128-page book enables readers to take inspiration from top contemporary designers—right from home. The premise is as original as it is fun: renowned designers such as Julie McCullough, Barbara Chapman, Barbara Evans, Annie Hesse, Jane Coughlan, Lynne Butcher, Barbara Willis, and others use 1 of the 3 simple patterns provided in the book to make a doll. Readers are able to look over the shoulder of the author, and of each designer, as she fashions her own unique creation. Crisp text, detailed illustrations, and color photos take readers step by step through the creative process.
